Rally for New Orleans Schools

The Rally for New Orleans Schools is an initiative to help improve the facilities of the New Orleans Public Schools by coordinating and soliciting volunteers and resources. The Rally was created in 1998 by the New Orleans Public Schools Alumni Association and New Orleans city government. Tulane University was involved since its inception. When the effort was discontinued in 2002, Tulane formulated its own Rally Committee to continue repair efforts. During 2002-2005, more than 3,000 volunteers have spent more than 20,000 hours painting, repairing and landscaping schools.

The schools repaired between 2002-2006 are as follows:

  • Carter G. Woodson Signature Leadership Academy
  • Charles J. Colton Middle School
  • John McDonogh Senior High School
  • Booker T. Washington High School
  • Joseph S. Clark Senior High School
  • John F. Kennedy High School
  • Martin Behrman Elementary School
  • Eleanor McMain Secondary School

Volunteers include students and alumni from Tulane University, Dillard University, Xavier University, Southern University of New Orleans, Louisiana State University –Baton Rouge, University of New Orleans, and the University of Louisiana - Lafayette; private corporations; local business owners; area churches; neighborhood associations; professional contractors and painters; and the parents, students and neighbors of the repaired schools.
